The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard biological terror, but inside Together lies a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He fears the concept of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple face the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
