Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle support.
