Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The anticipation about The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
